Founded in May 2023, the chamber choir "Ayamegusa" takes its name from a poem in the Kokin Wakashū anthology: "hototogisu / naku ya satsuki no / ayamegusa / ayame mo shiranu / koi mo suru kana" (The cuckoo sings / in the Fifth Month / among the irises - / not knowing the iris / yet falling in love). Based in Bunkyo City, Tokyo, the choir consists of approximately 20 members in their 20s and 30s who practice twice a month. Under the direction of conductor Hiroshi Hamada, they focus on performing Japanese compositions written in the Japanese language. The choir has won gold prizes in the Chamber Choir Division at both the 78th and 79th Tokyo Choral Competition.
